Homemade Toothpaste

Greywater Safe Toothpaste

Have you every looked at the ingredients on a package of commercial toothpaste?  Most of the ingredients are unrecognizable to anyone but a chemist.  For most of my husbands life, he suffered with frequent canker sores.  After asking a dentist about how to remedy his continual pain, he recommended getting toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).  It is not that easy to find a brand without SLS, even some types of Tom’s of Maine have it in.  When I saw a workshop advertised on how to make SLS-free toothpaste, I signed up right away.  I was very skeptical of the ingredients and wondered if the flavour would be good.  That night we both tried the toothpaste that I made and loved it!

During my Permaculture Design Certificate course, I learned about greywater systems.  One of the major factors in having a successful greywater system is being cautious of that products are put into the system.  Any products that contain sodium are not advised, which means SLS, soap made with lye (sodium hydroxide), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and many other common ingredients are all out.  Since baking soda is a very minor ingredient, I removed it and now have a greywater safe product.

This greywater safe toothpaste comes in a reusable container and contains the following ingredients: kaolin clay, arrowroot powder, calcium carbonate, vegetable glycerin, aloe juice, MSM powder, vitamin E, and essential oil of your choice.  Essential oil choices include: wintergreen, peppermint, fennel, anise, clove, vanilla, and sweet orange.

I am located near Mount Royal University where you can pick up your order.

Hope to hear from you soon!
